Vague Archive investigates the relationship between people and complex spatial elements, in particular the terrains vagues that dot our cities, and explores it from an innovative point of view opening a dialog within Communication Design and Neuroscience. With the term terrain vague we refer to all those spaces that, like missing, unspoken words in a discourse, lie waiting for a new future. They're resources for our cities and the project's aim is to make people aware of this "places of possibility".

To carry out the translation of territorial complexity another complexity is called into play: human complexity. This operation calls into play the field of Neuroscience, a scientific branch that attempts to understand man in greater depth through the study of the functioning of the neurons and their connection with the behavioural sphere. This field was intersected through a rhizomatic methodological approach: the "rizoma" metaphor by philosophers Deleuze and Guattari was applied to the research structure to identify an innovative point of view about the topic.

[ wearable devices ]
The way Neuroscience has a role in this project is mainly through the use of wearable devices; these tools are able to measure biometric data that can give us information about the perception of the space we're in.
These data are collected with these devices in occasion of a physical event, Vague Relation, where people have the opportunity to explore a terrain vague and, thanks to data translation, visualise the "shape" of their relation with a space considered empty but may still have a role to play.

The communicative translation of vagueness in this thesis takes shape in a digital archive that acts as a tool to make the territorial elements legible, through the collection of perceptual data and data pertaining to the psychological sphere of the person, referred to in this thesis as ‘vague data’ because it is not entirely measurable. In this way I tried to structure a communicative system to translate a complexity through the other, trying to give value to things we don't fully understand, but that we still have to deal with.

To realise this communicative translation it was necessary to identify how to make legible the data about perception, together with the more intimate and psychological data. For this reason to the perception concept was associate a sphere, which shape changes related to the data collected:
the picks collected by wearable devices are translated in picks that deform the sphere.
Color, instead, express the psychological data collected thanks to a specific User Interface designed ad hoc for the project.

All the collected data are made visible in the digital platform, Vague Archive, which aim is to make legible terrain values and help people relate with them. Thanks to the platform the project remains active during all the year, continuing to collect voice recording of people memories or suggestions about these places mapped by the Archive throughout the city
